Town Hall, Providennciales - Turks & Caicos Islands
On the list of the world’s top recreational diving sites, with pristine coral reefs and some of the most beautiful beaches to be found anywhere in the world, tourism has become an important element in the economy of the Islands. The 40 islands, 8 of which are inhabited, are situated 900km (530 miles) south east of Miami, Florida. A land area of 430km² (165 sq miles) allows luxurious space for the population of 22,000, two thirds of whom live on the island of Providenciales where the Islands’ principal international airport is situated.

Bermudian salt collectors were the first to settle the Islands around 1680. A hundred years later they found themselves under a short period of French occupation. After the American Revolution loyalists fled to Caribbean countries including, in 1783, a contingent to the Caicos chain. 1799 saw the Islands annexed by Britain as part of the Bahamas until 1848 when they became, firstly, a separate colony and then, in 1873, part of Jamaica. After a further short period as a separate colony (1959) and as a constitutive part of the Federation of The West Indies (1962), the Governor of The Bahamas oversaw affairs from 1965 until 1973. Upon Bahamian independence in 1973 the Islands received a separate governor and remain today a British Crown Colony. Internal self-government was attained in 1976.

The currency of Turks & Caicos Islands is the US Dollar and English is the official language. The legal system is based on English Common Law.
